What is Bubble Tea?

Want to know the difference between Bubble Tea, Milk Tea, Boba Tea and where to find and identify the best milk tea in Atlanta?

Boba Tea, Milk Tea, Bubble Tea are all the same thing! Think of it as a "latte" for Tea where there is the brewed tea with milk or creamer added to it. They usually come with toppings like tapioca, more generally called boba, grass jelly or other types of jelly. Trendier places add yogurt, aloe, pudding, fruit and more.

Milk Teas have been around for ages, it is only in the last 20 years it took the world by storm with the addition of the tapioca "boba" pearls and signature fat drinking straws. Some say in order to make it easier to pronounced they called Boba Tea, "Bubble Tea" instead.

Contrary to what you might think, "bubble tea" does not reference the tapioca balls that come in the drink. The Bubbles actually represent the frothy bubbles that appear with the tea is shaken with the milk or creamer.

In Vietnam, the tapioca pearls are called "bột báng" which likely is similar to the pronunciation of the Chinese "Boba"  and the miniature version of these pearls have been the staple in most pudding/sweet soup for decades.

Regardless of how you like to call it or how the restaurants label, the first thing to notice in a high quality tea is the color. Is it super vibrant and bright? If so you are likely buying an artificial powdered drink. The next is taste, can you actually taste the tea? Usually the fruit teas have no tea in them. Suppliers can get away with selling to the restaurants syrups with artificial fruit flavoring and calling it tea. Most cafes and restaurants won't know either.

If you drink the tea and it has a bit of a powdery after taste or it is thick, usually an artificial creamer is used. Taiwanese milk teas use creamer to not water down the tea taste.

At Bun Mi Vietnamese Grill you will not find any teas made from artificial powders or creamers. Our teas are brewed in a 24 hour process and we use real milk and sugar. We pride ourselves in serving food that we would serve our family members: high quality, less processing, and full of flavors.
